Biking the French Loire Valley-Fall 2003

I took a three day bike trip (huffy, not harley) through the French Loire Valley. I flew into Paris, took a train to Blois and met my bike at the hotel. After the travel and the layovers, it got fun. I got a decent nights sleep in spite of the time difference. I biked from Blois through the Blois Forrest, passing through Chouzy Sur Cisse, Onzain, and Chaumont Sur Loire to Amboise. After arriving around 1pm or so, I checked in to the hotel, showered and began to explore a new town. The tour company transfered my luggage. It arrived well ahead of me the whole way. I spent the night in Amboise.

Up early the next day, I biked to Chenonceaux. I arrived in Chenonceaux around 1pm. I visited Chateau Chenonceaux before arriving in the City itself. This took about twenty minutes. You've seen one Chateau, you've seen them all. Lots of big, beautiful rooms that some Fat Cat taxed the poor working people so he could build a monument to himself. Then onto the City. The City consisted of five hotels and five restaurants. It's 1pm. What am I going to do until my 8pm dinner reservation? Why drink the best French wine, of course. This coupled with a delicious rack of lamb lunch kept me busy for several hours. Then, it was off to bed for a nap. When I awoke, I found it was a beautiful Sunday evening, so I took a nice long walk meeting several locals getting together for Sunday dinner. My dinner was more of the same. I was getting a lot of exercise, so didn't worry about eating too much. Up early the next day, it was time to return to Blois. Passing through Montrichard and Les Montils, I arrived in Blois around 1pm. I stayed at the same hotel as when I arrived, so we were old buddies by now. Since I didn't get to explore Blois before leaving for Amboise, I now had the chance. It is a typical beautiful French village, with a chateau of its own. Think I went in?

The last night in France for awhile. I couldn't resist dining at the Buffalo Grill. A great American restaurant. Nothing like roasted chicken, fries and a couple of Cokes.

The trip home was a chore. I was up for 23 hours and traveling 22 hours. What a great time. I had biked 75 miles over three days by the time I was done. I biked through farm country, little villages, and wine country. I may never take another vacation without a bike. It's a great way to see the country. Some photographs follow.
